We started to climb Mt. Ithomi, which is only about a mile going straight up. We walked more than a mile though, because we took a path that went around the mountain. The path we took was not paved, and the dirt on the ground was reddish brown. It was made from these rocks (the same color of the dirt) that crumbled when you picked them up. We also spotted a lizard and several wildflowers which we took pictures of.
When we finally reached the top, we visited an empty monastery where monks used to live. We got to go and look in all of the little rooms where the monks got to sleep and my little sister rang the bell that was hanging from a window.
Also at the very top of the mountain were the ruins for a temple to Zeus. It is sometimes said that Zeus was born there and not in Crete.
One of the wildflowers.
The climb down was much easier, and we discovered a temple to Artemis on the way down.
The views were amazing from the top of the mountain. It's quite warm around this time and everything was lush and green so when you looked over the village and the fields it was all beautiful shades of green.
We could see the ocean in Kalmata, even though it's about thirty kilometers away. It was a wonderful view that showed the flourishing landscape of the Mediterranean.
The monastery.
I really felt like I was on the top on the world when I was on
the mountain even though it wasn't that tall.
